A Little Nature and a Little Self-Care

Sometimes, self-care isn't about bubble baths, candles, or curling up with a good book. Sometimes, it's about getting outside, breathing in the fresh air, and spending time with someone you love.
For me, one of my favorite places to do just that is Dow Gardens in Midland, Michigan.
There is something about being surrounded by nature that makes me feel at peace. Maybe it's the sound of leaves rustling in the breeze, the smell of the flowers, or the simple beauty of watching the seasons change. Whatever it is, nature has always had a way of reminding me to slow down.
And slowing down isn't something I do particularly well.
I tend to fill my days with work, writing, projects, responsibilities, and a never-ending list of things I want to accomplish. Even when I'm supposed to be relaxing, my mind is usually planning the next thing.
But nature doesn't seem to care about my to-do list.
The trees aren't rushing to grow. The flowers aren't worried about tomorrow. The paths don't demand that I reach the end by a certain time. Everything simply exists, and perhaps that's something I need to remember more often.
Spending time at Dow Gardens with Cody makes the experience even more meaningful.
As our children grow older, the time we spend together changes. Gone are the days when I planned every outing, packed the snacks, and decided what adventure we would have next. Now, those opportunities to simply spend time together are something I appreciate in a completely different way.
We don't need a big adventure or an elaborate plan. Sometimes, walking together, talking about whatever comes to mind, or simply enjoying our surroundings is enough.
And maybe that's another part of self-care we don't talk about enough.
Self-care isn't always about spending time by ourselves. Sometimes, it's about reconnecting with the people who make us feel like ourselves.
I love experiencing places through my senses. I notice the sounds, the smells, the textures, and those little details that often become memories long after the day has ended. Dow Gardens offers all of that. But when I think back on a day spent there with Cody, I know the most important memory won't necessarily be a particular flower, tree, or pathway.
It will be the time we spent together.
Life has a funny way of keeping us busy. We tell ourselves we'll take that walk another day, visit that favorite place when we have more time, or make plans when things settle down.
But when exactly does life settle down?
Perhaps the secret is realizing that we don't have to wait.
We can choose to take an afternoon, step away from our responsibilities, and enjoy the world around us. We can make time for the people we love while also making time for ourselves.
And sometimes, those two things can happen at the same time.
So here's my little reminder to myself, and perhaps to you, too.
Get outside. Visit a place that makes you happy. Spend time with someone you love. Notice the little things. Breathe in the fresh air and allow yourself to simply enjoy the moment.
Because sometimes the best kind of self-care isn't about doing something special for yourself.
It's about recognizing that the ordinary moments are pretty special, too.
