State Standards on Holidays

Today, I had an insightful discussion about state standards, specifically focusing on a Michigan standard: “Identify the events or people celebrated during U.S. national holidays and why we celebrate them.” The key question was how to distinguish between educational content and holiday celebrations.


This standard emphasizes educating students about the historical significance of national holidays. It aims to provide an objective examination of the events and figures that have shaped our country, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and September 11th. This type of instruction typically falls under social studies or history lessons.


On the other hand, celebrating a holiday involves engaging in activities or events that mark a specific occasion. These celebrations are generally extracurricular and supplementary, occurring outside the main instructional curriculum. It’s important to plan these activities carefully to avoid favoring one tradition over another and to ensure inclusivity.


I've been reflecting on how to navigate these practices in schools, and understanding the distinction between teaching holiday history and celebrating holidays is crucial. Balancing these aspects requires a thoughtful approach. As educators, we must adhere to state standards by focusing on the factual and cultural context of holiday history. When planning celebrations, we need to consider our students' diverse backgrounds and design activities that are respectful and inclusive.


Effective communication with students and their families about the educational content and historical focus is also essential. We should seek their perspectives and preferences regarding celebratory practices and offer alternative activities that allow all students to feel included and valued.


Understanding and clarifying this distinction helps create a learning environment that is both informative and respectful. Engaging in this conversation will assist everyone involved in navigating the complexities of holiday education and celebrations with sensitivity and insight.
