I was recently asked, "What is one of your favorite novels?" After thinking on it for a while, one book kept coming back to me: Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls.
I've read it multiple times, and every time, without fail, I cry. There's something so deeply powerful about a child setting their mind to something and not only changing their own life but also impacting their family. It's a story of determination, love, and loss. It reminds me that sometimes we don't know how our requests will be answered—but they often come in ways we may never expect.
The bond between Billy and his two dogs, Old Dan and Little Ann, is what makes this book unforgettable. Their love, loyalty, and sacrifice for one another highlight the deep connection between humans and animals. It's heartbreaking, beautiful, and a love that stays with me long after I've closed the book.
As a matter of fact, it's probably time for me to read it again. If you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend it. It's a story that will stick with you long after the last page.
