The Gift of Friendship

Sometimes the biggest blessings begin with the smallest moments. A simple conversation, a shared laugh, a chance meeting, or an unexpected adventure. Looking back, I realize the people who have changed my life the most didn't arrive with grand entrances. They simply became the people who stood beside me through celebrations, heartbreaks, ordinary Tuesdays, and all the moments in between. Over time, those friendships became part of who I am.

I don't have hundreds of close friends, and I don't need to. I have a few people who know me well, who laugh with me until we cry, remind me who I am when I forget, encourage my dreams, and make life richer simply by being in it. True friendship isn't measured by numbers. It's measured by trust, acceptance, and the feeling that someone is genuinely glad you're in their life. I know how fortunate I am to have those people.

That belief is one of the reasons I created Julie and Cody in the Annie the Porcupine series. I never wanted Annie to be surrounded by classmates who were only kind because a teacher told them to be. Kindness is important, but friendship is something deeper. I wanted Annie to experience friends who chose one another, who cared about each other because of who they were, not because someone expected them to.

I think every person deserves that kind of community. We all need people who make us feel seen, accepted, and valued just as we are. The strongest friendships are built on shared laughter, honest conversations, and showing up for one another through life's highs and lows. Those are the relationships that shape us and remind us that we never have to walk through life alone.

Sometimes the smallest moments become the greatest gifts. A conversation turns into a friendship. A friendship becomes family. And before we realize it, the people who once were strangers have become some of the very best parts of our story.
