Today, I had the honor of joining a group of like-minded individuals for a meeting with Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. Our purpose was to discuss the needs of the LGBTQ+ community in our state, a topic close to my heart as both an educator, an advocate for inclusivity and an LGBTQ+ ally.
From the moment we walked into the room, the atmosphere was full of a sense of purpose. AG Nessel's dedication to creating a safer, more inclusive Michigan was evident. She spoke passionately about her vision for our state and her unwavering commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community. It was inspiring to hear her discuss her plans and thoughts on how we can continue to foster acceptance and equality.
As we delved into our discussion, many of us voiced our primary concern: ensuring a safe and supportive school environment for our youth. It's a topic that resonates deeply with me. The importance of providing a safe haven for our students, where they can learn and grow without fear of discrimination or bullying, cannot be overstated.
AG Nessel listened intently to our concerns, offering insights and potential solutions. Her genuine interest in our perspectives and her willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue reaffirmed my belief that we are moving in the right direction.
One of the highlights of the meeting for me personally came at the very end. I had the brief opportunity (a matter of one minute) to speak with AG Nessel about my passion for creating children's books that represent the underrepresented. To my delight, she even took an autographed copy of "I Don't Celebrate Anything."
This experience was a powerful reminder of the importance of community and the impact we can have when we come together to advocate for what we believe in. I am grateful to have been a part of this meeting and look forward to continuing to work towards a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
Thank you, Attorney General Nessel, for your leadership and dedication. And thank you to my fellow advocates for your tireless efforts and shared vision. Together, we can make a difference.
